Timeline Combat Guide - Counters & Rush Combos
The complete Tactical Counter-Timeline guide: reading the gauge, Perfect Guard timing, Counter Attacks, Buddy Counters, Rush 200/300 combos, buffs in onslaught gaps, and Arcanum Awakening finishers.
Quick Answer: How Does Timeline Combat Work?
The Tactical Counter-Timeline is a gauge that exposes the exact timing and nature of every incoming enemy attack before it lands. Your job is to answer it: program skills that intercept the offense, Perfect Guard the attacks you must eat, counter the ones you can punish, slip buffs into narrow gaps, and chain skills into Rush combos that end in an Arcanum Awakening. You can slow time or pause at any moment — mastery means doing all of this at full speed, turning tactical chess into aggressive, stylish offense.
Reading the Gauge
Every enemy action appears on the timeline with its timing and nature visible. Dense clusters — several attacks queued together — are the signal to stop time and plan; single telegraphed attacks are counter fodder. The gauge also tracks your cooldowns, which is how you know whether the answer to this window is a guard, a counter, or a buff into a Rush chain. Fight the timeline, not the animation.
Defense: Perfect Guard and Why It Matters
Perfect Guard is a timed guard that negates an attack cleanly — one is enough for the Impenetrable Defense achievement, but the real reward is tempo: a Perfect Guard leaves you positioned to punish, where a dodge leaves you repositioning. Learn the timing on Wailing Wraith-class enemies in Shibuya, where mistakes are cheap. The hardest expression is Cool and Collected — a chapter boss defeated without taking damage.
Counters: The Core Reward Loop
Counter Attacks are where Qliphah pays out: 250 of them (Untouchable) is one of the game’s big combat milestones, and every counter converts enemy aggression into your offense. Buddy Counters — Rena and Soma’s joint counters — are prompted when the pair is positioned for it; 100 (Perfect Synchronization) is the system’s mastery check. Treat counter prompts as the fight’s rhythm section: hit them on cue and the boss’s offense becomes your combo starter.
Offense: Rush Chains and the Finisher
Chained skills build Rush — 200 earns Relentless Assault, 300 earns In a Frenzy. The formula: open a window with a buff, chain Battle Skills back-to-back without dropping the combo, and hold the Arcanum Awakening for the kill (All-Out Attack wants exactly that — a finishing blow with the Awakening). Long boss phases are where Rush 300 lives; buff first, then unload the whole palette.
The Sub-Palette habit
The HUD shows two prompts worth building habits around: time-stop (Y) and Sub-Palette swap (RB). A two-page palette — offense page and support page — means a five-slot build covers a whole fight: swap to support to survive a cluster, swap back to cash the recovery. The skills hub covers palette construction in depth.
