Quick Answer: How Does the Skill System Work?

Qliphah's combat runs on skills you collect, customize and chain. You acquire skills as drops from Battle Sites and Search Areas (every point of interest on the map lists its skill drop rate), arrange them into your customizable Skill Palette, and fire them through the Tactical Counter-Timeline — programming chains that shatter enemy attacks, buff your partner, and stack Rush combos toward the Arcanum Awakening finisher. The system scales from methodical pause-and-plan play to aggressive action-game offense as you master it.

Check the skill drop rate on the map before choosing a route — two Search Areas cost the same countdown time, but only one of them banks the skill you are missing.

The Timeline Is the Skill System

What makes Qliphah's skills unusual is where they execute: the Tactical Counter-Timeline. A dynamic gauge shows the exact timing and nature of every incoming enemy attack, and you slot your own skills against that forecast — intercepting an offense, slipping a buff into a narrow gap, or stacking a combo across an enemy's recovery. Slow time or pause at any moment to read the forecast, track cooldowns, and plan. Skills are not a rotation; they are an answer sheet.

Two Characters, One Palette Discipline

Rena and Soma share the fight as a unit — your controlled character fires Battle Skills and Move Skills (the achievements track usage per controlled character), while Buddy Counters and cross-buffs weave the pair together. A healthy palette carries offense, a buff, a recovery ability, and a repositioning tool; swap control to match the phase — Rena to dismantle dense attack clusters, Soma to cash openings with Rush chains.

Sub-Palette and On-Screen Controls

Combat uses a live Sub-Palette you can swap mid-fight (RB on the standard control scheme) alongside the time-stop button (Y) — the official combat screenshots show both prompts on the HUD. The Sub-Palette is how a five-slot arrangement covers a whole fight: offensive page for punish windows, support page for surviving an onslaught. The controls page breaks down the full scheme.
